A Student Eating Sushi with a Chimp on a Glass Island

Gerling

Gerling - A Student Eating Sushi with a Chimp on a Glass Island

Since 2005 I’ve been part of a club, a Song of the Week club with two friends and the basic idea is to share music, the music that sums up your week. So for 6 years we’ve shared weekly accounts of our lives and how it relates to the music we share, it’s a simple club: send an email, attach an MP3 or include a YouTube clip and a few words to explain yourself.

It’s a funny thing to think about ‘your soundtrack to your life’ and this is a nice way of documenting that experience with friends.

The club started with two guys I used to work with, Corey and Jamie. Originally it was a Song of the Day process but we soon realised that it was far to difficult to take it in turns to send a song a day … so we created something to look forward too on a Friday morning. The club has expanded now to include my partner in crime Bree (aka Pants), every good rock band / special club needs a girl right? So that’s our story.

I’ve thought long about what I wanted this blog to be, I post random crap here and it has no point, no direction and no real purpose. So I’ll share my ramblings about my Song of the Week on Sunky Speaks now. *cue mass unsubscribes*

So without anymore ramblings, here is this weeks Song of the Week.

For me this week I’ve been discovering my love for an old band (feels weird to say that) … Gerling.

I was listening to an interview with current indie/dance group Cut Copy the other day and they were saying about when they started out in 2001 that bands like Gerling and The Avalanches were creating a scene that wasn’t around anywhere else in the world (at the time) by mixing live guitar/drum instruments and electro beats to make indie pop music.

It was something my young ears at the time didn’t question, these were just three kids that were having fun with songs like Death to the Apple Girls, Ghost Patrol and then also creating dance numbers with Kylie Minogue too! (Who at the time was going through that ‘not so successful’ phase - Can’t Get You Out of My Head was years away). I do remember her saying that working with Gerling was something that introduced her to the indie dance scene.

Anyway this is a tribute to Gerling, a band long since broken up and with no plans to get back together. I miss these guys, but I’ve enjoyed listening to their records this week and the pure fun and style that is mixed together. I was lucky enough to see them live a bunch of times since the beginning (oh the back packs) and one of my favourite gigs ever was seeing them at the BDO with Pants way back when. (2004 or 2003?!) … glitter, back packs and crazy dance moves … ok I’m rambling.

Basically there are a shit tone of bands at the moment creating similar music to what Gerling started a decade ago. Tribute to the crazy ones! Not one of their most well known tracks but still a special one, think of this as if James Brown was a white kid from Australia when he recorded King Herion.

Till next week!

Simon
