What I will say is that (a) The show was amazing and (b) during the set I was caught off guard when the band pulled out a cover of Wolf Parade’s – Modern World. If you know me, we are friends on last.fm or you follow my tweets, no doubt you would have heard of my love for everything Wolf Parade. Anyway, amoungst all the love of songs from Spoon it was a pleasure to hear them cover (and do justice to) the first Wolf Parade song I heard and the song that got me hooked.
I’m still yet to see Wolf Parade live, so this as good as it gets for now. I found a cover from Britt Daniel (Spoon) playing Modern World from 2008, I’ve uploaded it to share – download!

PS: Wolf Parade’s new album Expo 86 is out “very” soon … expect a review and many tweets during this time.
I had a plan to put together a video of the tour and here it is. The amazing thing with this is it was the first time I had really used iMovie in a long time and I just wanted to make mention it is so easy to use. Importing the video, applying different film effects and adding the soundtrack took less than 5 hours to do and in my limited film experience … that isn’t that bad.
So from Perth to Melbourne, with my partner in crime Pants by my side … here is Pavement.

It does feel like that huh? That is a line from the song ‘So Far Round the Bend‘ by The National from the Dark Was The Night complication released in 2009, it would ironically be the year that Pavement actually announced they were getting back together. If you don’t know who Pavement are and their importance in 90′s music than the rest of this post won’t mean anything to you, feel free to keep reading though. So why use that lyric? Well I was one of those kids that always prayed for Pavement to get back together and I think that with all the indie kids doing it, it finally happened.
In a few weeks Pavement will be playing their first show back, at this stage it seems that New Zealand will be the first show, but rumours are spreading the band will play a small gig somewhere in the US to dust off those cobwebs first. The countdown is on for myself and Pants as we’ll be not only catching the guys in Perth, but also making the trip over to Melbourne to catch a few shows too. Pavement are ‘one of those’ bands for us, one of those bands that have a song for every mood you’re in, one of those bands that make you dance and smile but also give you a hug when you’re feeling blue, one of those bands that will always hold a special connection since we met. If you know me and I say “This is practically as big as when the Smashing Pumpkins toured Australia in 2008 for us” then you know this tour is extremely important.
So while talking about those Pumpkins, it makes a perfect segue to explain how I got into Pavement. So I knew of Pavement in the mid 90′s, I’m sure I’d seen a clip or two on rage and I’m sure I would have liked them but there was one thing I just couldn’t ignore. They dissed my band, they dissed The Smashing Pumpkins. In Pavement’s song ‘Range Life‘ from their ‘Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain‘ album the Malkmus sings the line ” … Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins / Nature kids / I, they don’t have no function I don’t understand what they mean and I could really give a fuck … ” and to me these were fighting words. That was it, I would never count myself as a Pavement fan. Fast forward to 2002 to when I met, and started dating, Pants (both an equally big Smashing Pumpkins and Pavement fan) and she explained the meaning behind the lyrics and pointed me towards this interview with NY ROCK and Stephen Malkmus from 1999.

NY ROCK: There are a lot of speculations about the relationship between Pavement and the Smashing Pumkins…
STEPHEN: A lot of people claim we dissed them. We never did. I only laughed about the band name, because it does sound kinda silly… Smashing Pumpkins…. And well, their status, that they were the indie darlings, the heroes of the indie scene. I never really dissed their music. I like their songs – well, most of their songs anyway. Especially “1979,” that’s a cool song. As I said, I never dissed their music. I just dissed their status. I never really cared for the rock’n'roll lifestyle or being.

Ohhhhhh, so it seems that I was kind of wrong and it seems my naive view of the band caused me to miss out on years of enjoying their work. I mean other bands I love always cited them as huge influences, I should like them too. So with Pants now in my life she made me a Pavement mixtape (cd) for my 21st birthday [pictured below]
So the mixtape obviously worked, I became hooked hearing Cut Your Hair, Spit on a Stranger and their cover of The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen. From then on Pavement went from being just Pants’ band to being ‘our’ band. The car trips out and about would be filled with sing-a-longs and taking turns in singing their duo parts of “… A Carrot Rope”. So as the weeks become less until we see this band, catch up with equally excited friends in both Perth and Melbourne the excitement level in Chateau Brunky is just going to get higher and higher. To help with this and to help other Pavement fans out there I’m going to open up my live recording vault again and start sharing some live recordings again. YAY! So let me introduce to you …

To pay tribute to this legend of Australian music history, I wanted to dig into my music vaults again and share a rare live recording of The Boys Next Door. The recording is from the 19th of July in 1977 recorded at the Swinburne College in Melbourne, Victoria.
The show is a short setlist that features mainly cover songs and is definately one for the Nick Cave, Birthday Party & Boys Next Door fans out there, play it loud and say farewell to Rowland S. Howard.

I need your help finding a music documentary about the rise from ‘garage to glory’ of young bands from Australia called ‘Dead Set‘. It contains informal interviews and live footage from pubs / festivals from bands such as You Am I, Spiderbait, Custard, Regurgitator, Grinspoon and many more.
Why do I need you help?
My copy is dead … really, dead set. Ha!
Being a VHS it was destroyed by a hungry video player one day and I’ve never been able to find another copy … if you ever see a copy, please let me know. If you’re able to create a digital version, then please let me know.
After searching the internet, this is all I have been able to find … a clip of mainly Tim Rogers (You Am I) talking about the band, the Australian scene and blowing money on crack and hookers, along with small clips of Spiderbait (talking about ‘making it’ when they got a gig in Sydney), Custard (calling Tim a tall poppy) and Grinspoon still when Phil wore make up.

The history of The Beatles at Shea Stadium
The Shea Stadium concert on August 15 was record breaking and one of the most famous concert events of its era. It was the first concert to be held at a major outdoor stadium and set records for attendance and revenue generation — promoter Sid Bernstein said, “Over 55,000 people saw the Beatles at Shea Stadium. We took $304,000, the greatest gross ever in the history of show business” demonstrating that outdoor concerts on a large scale could be successful and profitable.
The Beatles were transported to the roof of the World’s Fair by a New York Airways Boeing Vertol 107-II helicopter, then taking a Wells Fargo armoured truck to the stadium. At the stadium itself were 2,000 security personnel to handle crowd control.[1] The crowd was confined to the spectator areas of the stadium with nobody other than the band themselves and security personnel allowed on the field. As a result of this, the audience was a long distance away from the band while they played on a small stage in the middle of the field.
“Beatlemania” was at one of its highest marks at the Shea Concert. Film footage taken at the concert shows many teenagers and women crying, screaming, and even fainting. The crowd noise was such that security guards can be seen covering their ears as the The Beatles enter the field.
The sound was so deafening that none of The Beatles could hear much of anything. Vox had specially designed 100-watt amplifiers for this tour and it was still not anywhere near loud enough, and so the Beatles used the house amplification system. John Lennon described the noise as “wild” and also twice as deafening when the Beatles performed. Not being able to hear each other or even themselves, The Beatles just played through a list of songs nervously, not knowing what kind of sound was being produced. At the end of the show (during “I’m Down”), John Lennon saw the whole show as being so ridiculous that he just began playing the keyboard with his elbows while the whole group laughed hysterically. The Beatles section of the concert was extremely short by modern standards (just 30 minutes), but was the typical 1965 Beatles tour set list, with Ringo opting to sing “Act Naturally” instead of “I Wanna Be Your Man.”

This show from 2001 was at an interesting time for the You Am I boys, they had recently added a new man into their line up (Mr Davey Lane) and their 5th studio release ‘Dress Me Slowly’ had hit the record stores. While a solid record, and personal favourite, it didn’t capture the sound or soul of the earlier “hit parade” days for You Am I. It is often seen as a forgotten gem.
This live recording contains a few short interviews with lead singer, song writer and most likely part-time pirate Tim Rogers, talking about his approach to song writing and such. Enjoy the gig, tune in and tune out as Tim, Andy, Rusty and Dave take you on a musical journey.

Centred around the prolific songwriting skills of singer/guitarist Tim Rogers, pop group YOU AM I are one of the most successful and internationally admired Australian bands of the ’90s. Their influences combine the Who, Small Faces, Jam, Clash and The Replacements. The first version of YOU AM I included Tim Rogers with his school friend Nick Tischler and Tim’s older brother Jaimme in December 1989. (The band name came from a conversation at a gig with a spaced out fan sprouting “You am I, I am you” philosophies.). Ultimately they were replaced by the group’s one-time sound mixer Andy Kent (bass) and Russell Hopkinson (drums), creating the classic three piece rock line-up which has been the core of the band. Their breakthrough came at the inaugural Lollapalooza style Big Day Out concert in January 1993. Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth was impressed enough to produce their fourth EP “Coprolalia”, followed by eight days spent in Canon Falls, Minnesota where Renaldo helped produce the band’s first album “Sound as Ever”. Their next album, “Hi Fi Way” earned You Am I the first of its Australian number one albums, plus a handful of ARIA awards. The following ’60s retro concept album “Hourly Daily” was recorded and produced locally in Sydney. In June 1998 YOU AM I released the return to basics album “#4 Record”. Commercially successful in Australia, critically acclaimed around the world, Tim Rogers has pushed his talents beyond YOU AM I with solo performances, releasing a solo album “What Rhymes with Cars and Girls”, producing the soundtrack for the 1997 movie “Idiot Box”, and writing songs to order for various Australian recording artists.
