I honestly can’t remember the days before I joined last.fm, seriously 2005 is such a long time ago. The ability to keep track of every song I listen to for a year is something I will never get sick of tracking. It shows me where my head was at for the year, as corny as it sounds it reminds me of the soundtrack to my life
As the year ended on December 31st, I listened to my final song for 2008 (The Beatles – Julia) and took a screen shot of my charts on last.fm. With that all done, here are the results …
Top Artists for ’08
No real surprise for number one, everybody knows my relationship with the Smashing Pumpkins but 9060 songs? Let me explain that, why won’t you let me explain! … Majority of that number would have been live shows from the Live Media Archive, but still it is the year the band tour Australia so of course I would have got a bit excited listening to their music. As for the other 14, it was really nothing different than from years gone. The bands that have shaped the last 10+ years of my life. Although I have to say that the two bands for whom my love grew for this year are Okkervil River and Wolf Parade, next year I expect them to be much higher.

Top Tracks for ’08
When I look at this list it reminds me of one thing, the greatest 20 song playlist I made this year. Actually ever. Tracks 1,2,3,5,6,8 and 10 all appeared in this said playlist. The only thing I can say about this playlist is that it went for the right amount of time, the songs flowed so perfectly with sound and tempo. Expect it to appear as a mix one day here.
As previously mentioned Okkervil River really captured my heart this year, a band I had always admired for a few years but something just clicked last year. I can’t explain what it was, or is, but it was like that I finally ‘got them’. Their message was getting through to me and I was picking up the reception loud and clear.

So there is one thing missing, What are the albums of last year? … be patient, they are coming soon.

Shannon added these pithy words on Jan 04 09 at 3:57 amI can tell the length of time that I’ve used a service (like last.fm, or livejournal or even twitter) by the password I use. Last.fm was one of the earliest, I think I joined in 2005 or thereabouts. I get stealthy and turn scrobbling off on my computer from time to time because listening to music gets so personal for me sometimes that I don’t like to publish it with the interwebs so it’s not as accurate for tabulating my listening habits as it is for some. Also, my iPhone just refuses to scrobble stuff, and it’s how I listen to music most of the time now anyway.
Thanks for linking FoodHax!
and for the Okkervil River playlist. I should get my hands on some more of their stuff.
admin added these pithy words on Jan 07 09 at 9:08 amI’ve actually started listening to more CD’s again and less digital, so I expect my last.fm to be a bit out this year. I just kept catching myself listening to half a record, then skipping the rest. I’m making sure I don’t fall into that bad habit of putting albums on shuffle. Strange I know.
PS: thanks for being the first comment here
